Thunder - Rock City
Last night, what an excellent night it was.
Thunder do a Christmas show and its well worth it. They are their own support, so it is very extended, a good laugh and they play lots of different artists songs.
One of my Gigs of the year.

not done much
Not really done much with the festive time upon me.
Last few Tuesdays I have been going to Gigs so not been out and played. Seen Marillion and From the Jam. Both were excellent.
Tried to do a new open mic in Nottinham last night. It has the advantage of being right outside the bus stop. Anyhow, on my way in and I get a call from the organiser that it was off. I had called him an hour or so earlier and it was on. He was shocked when he turned up to find some other evey on.
Oh well thats rock and roll.
Off to see Thunder and Fish this week.
keep on Rocking and Happy Christmas

w/e 30/11/07 Open Mic -
Tuesday 27/11/07 Great Western, Warwick
Went back to where it all started.
It was about two years ago when I did my first ever open-mic at the Western. What a difference. I was a nervous wreck, before during and after, and that was this time. No seriously I am a much better performer. I still cock-up but that's fine and I handle it. I only do it for fun.
The two young ladies from the night deserve a mention in my despatches They were excellent. Very Excellent. One on Guitar, one on Flute, both sang and it was their own stuff as well.
I met some old friends who I expected to be there, missed some who were not there and saw some friendswho I was not expecting to be there. It was a late night and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have become spoilt with having some monitors over the past few months and that was missing as I could not really hear myself.
Played
In my Heart - jon Chapman
Staffordshire Hill - Jon Chapman
50 things to do beforeI die - Jon Chapman
I will tryand up the key on Staffordshire Hill as recommended by Jez.
Ireally miss Warwick.

Tuesday 6/11/07 - Greyhound, Beeston, Nottingham
A very empty pub tonight, so an extra song
In my Heart - Jon Chapman
Ballard of Bob & Rose - Jon Chapman
Drowned - the Who
Brain Damage/Eclipse - Pink Floyd
Behind Blue Eyes/Won't get fooled again- the Who. Started to add the opening few bars to this brilliant song. I will extend over time.
I felt I let my self down given that I had not played much since last time, not even at home. Will need to practice more.
Songs I was going to play were Better Man and Love is/Nails. The Greyhound is not a Love is/Nails place also my lack of practice meant I did not feel up for it.

Tuesday 23/10/07
Tuesday 23/10/07 - Greyhound, Beeston
Second visit to this pub in Beeston. It was bit empty but I like it. The sound is good with a good live foldback, which I like. May become my Tuesday venue of choice.
This was the first time I have played all my own songs, although I should have played Better Man, not Tombstone, simply because I could do with another live outing for this song.
I also had not played for over two weeks, so I was feeling out of practice.
Played
Ballad of Bob and Rose - Jon Chapman
In My Heart - Jon Chapman (Premier)
Tombstone - Jon Chapman
50 things to do before I die - Jon Chapman
In My Heart is my latest song. It is there musically but I may make some changes lyrically. Although when played live it sounded good and the lyrics seemed ok to sing.
In my Heart isa love song! Not sure I know too much about Lurve, or being romantic and soppy, but with lines relating to Washing Lines on a summers day, what else could it be about. As far as I am concerned it a song about contentment and commitment. It has mixed tempos.
The Ballad of Bob and Rose is about the night at the Rose of Denmark when I had about 14 people down from work to see me play, and have a few drinks as well, the local council banned the pub from playing live music.
The Rose in the title is the pub, Bob is Bob Garrett. An excellent but strange individual who plays a mean banjo and guitar. He plays his own interesting songs in his own distinctive style.
The song is set around a mythical love affair.
I think it musically and lyrically it plays and sings well. It will be on the new album!!
Talking of which. I am in the process of recording my stuff. Currently setting up at home the technology needed to do this, I currently do not even own a mic, but do have a stand!!!
Once I get the basics down, I will be able to add some additional lines.
Plan on a couple of the tracks being delivered in two, versions, acoustic and electric as I think they work both ways.
Well Badger is going back to work
Till next time .........

Monday 8/10/07 Golden Fleece, Nottingham
1st time I have played here. Was a nice set up. The stage is a head above the audience so you really look down on them, or another way is that the look up at you. Not sure if its in wonder or awe!!!
Played 50 things to do before I die - Jon Chapman
Don't Hurt Your self - Marillion
If I was a Carpenter - Tim Hardin
I did bottle out and not play two of mine.
Rush, Friday 12/10/07 NEC
I have been looking forward to this since the last time I saw them, I was not disappointed. A couple of times I thought the sound went a little muffled but hey, that's a live gig. They played stuff I have not seen since the original album came out and that was brilliant.
Oh well I enjoyed it and I got out of the car park with no trouble, so a result all round.
NEC Rant time.

Rant, a MAJOR one
Its not offten that I rant, and maybe last night was a one off, but I doubt it.
I was at an open mic, location secret, in Nottingham on Thursday nad the musicians were great. Load of different styles. Mainly guitar based but an very good beat-boxer, a guy rapping to a CD (not my cup of tea, but good none the less), and very good guitarist who spent 5 mins tuning, played very well if long and other players who were good as well. Good is very good in my opinion. The sound engineer was probably the best I have every heardat an open mic, constantly on the ball and even ensuring that the monitor sound was good for the performer. Bloody Brill.
What went wrong then. I did not play!
Well I put my name down early on, requested spot 4 so I could see what it was like and listen to thesound. Dilligently tuned up, but was not called forward. Later I asked when I was going on, he re-wrote hist list, or shouldI say added it again to his new list and I was on in 5 acts time. OK I thought, a bit late but never mind. The reason for the new list was that loads had turned up later and asked to go on "Early". Sorry if you cannot turn up Early you don't get on Early, in my opinion.
Any how, Iwas there, had been for hours and my turn came, and some one else went up. So was I on next because I had mis-counted, no, someone else was up after the current player, then me.
At this point I threw my toys out of the pram. Stated this was the crappiestand most shambolic of Open Mics I had ever attended, packed up and walked out. It is a shame, I like the pub and I have seen many great bands there, sothis is not a reflection on the venue.
Fine I had had a free drink, but for the record, thats not why I do it..
I am not precious enough to think I am the next guitar playing GOD. I like to listen and play. I do it for my fun. I do not automatically expect to play. However, 1st timers should always get a play, especially if they get their early and put their name down. This should be at the expense of the regulars.
I have been a regular at many open-mics and I have been dropped by the host because they have many one-offs or 1st timers. That is fine.
A few open-mic type rules
1. 1st timers always play. They should be given the option f when they want to play. It is a duanting experiance for 1st timers so all the support should be offered to place them at their ease.
2. The organise should orgainse the list and be strong enough to manage it3. Either 2 or 3 songs or 10 minutes, the list can go around a again. Personally I prefer 3 songs, of moderate length 3 - 4 mins. I have seen people do a sort of medley thing of about 3 songs then go "well thats 1 song done, the next is a medley of??? songs from the 70's"
3. Bloody well tune up before you play. The organise should plan ahead and give the next but one act time to set up.
As I left, following my minor rant and it was minor, the host appologised, fair do, but this is your show and it is your responsibility to ensure it runs correctly. He stated that it was not like this normally. If I go down again I am to let him know he pissed me off last time and then he would make sure I would get on. I will not do that.
Upon later reflection, I thought, that cannot be correct. There was young lad who had been down three times to try and play and had only just got on.
I will try again as I want to play there, not because he stated I would get on.

A Farwell to Bristol - Last Gig
Well thats it then
Played last night as there was a cock-up on the piss-up front. Had planned to go on Tuesday, the last night, but one body could not get a room, so three of us went out on Monday. Three blokes in Bristol looking for a good time, and it was closed! Well the pubs were open but there was no one out, all empty. Still we had a good time and one of the three failed to make it in to work on Tuesday.
so Tueday, I deceided to go to Somerset House in Clifton, Bristol. This is run by Martin and Helen and also Some People were playing a real bonus for me.
Played
Drowned - the Who
Dont Hurt Yourself - Marillion
Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC. Colleen was there as it was her who prompted me to play this song
Pinball Wizard - the Who
Then the brill Some People and Harry who was 83 was well happy buying us a drink. Happy birthday mate!!!
If I was a Carpenter - Tim Hardin
500 Mile - The Proclaimers. A bit ropy at the start, but improved as I went along
50 things to do before I die (aka Website) - Jon Chapman. Assisted by Martin John.
Well thats theend of the Bristol experiance. A few name drops
Robin Hood - Richard and Mirelle
Old Duke - Eddie Martin, Dan from Sweeden, Vid and a load of others
Rose of Denmark - Bob, Brian, Trevor
The guys and girls at the Moon & Sixpence in Cleavdon. Thanks for the hand dancing!!!!
Someerville Club. Well everyone really especially Helen and Martin, Some People, Ray, Tony, Stuart and ????, the bar man who serves an ideal Soda and Lime. I need a plaque where I sat for 6 months.
If I have missed anyone, let me know as it was not on purpose. Hope to see you soon as I have loads of happy memories.
May be in Warwick or Nottingham next.

w/e 20/7/07 - Open mic and other stuff
Well a busy weel. Just got home at 19:15 having left work at 12:15, in vain attempt to miss the floods, boy was I wrong.
Earlier we were talking about Noah, now God, i am sorry if I pissed you off, but please dont rain on every body else.
My journey home ended with a couple of drinks in Warwick, at the Great Western. This was after 5 hours of driving what would normally be a 1.5 hour drive.
I have driven through loads of floods, seen several cars, fail to get all the way through. But eventually I mad it home.
Now drivers of other cars, take note, please do not get pissed off with me or anybody else, if I, or they, fail to notice you in all the spray and crappy weather, if you only drive ith your bloody side lights on!
On to the music

W/e 13/7/07/07 Genesis & Open Mic
Genesis, Old Trafford 7/7/07
Well bloody brill. My only negatives was that they were playing in daylight most of the set so the great lighting effects were spoilt by the lovely weather. And I really dislike small vertical screens.
Music was on top form and it was loud.
I am pleased I went to see them on the video broadcast as that enabled me to enjoy it even more.
Tuesday 10/7/07 Somerset House, Bristol
Up with Bob again, several work friends came and supported me. Only one other open micer on that night who is a brilliant piano player.
Played
Tombstone - Jon Chapman (my mates dont like this because of the way the lyrics spell F$%^ You. And therefore think I am telling my estimed audiance F&*$ You. I am not.
Brain Damage - Pink Floyd - Special Request for Dave
Nails - Jon ChapmanWebsite - Jon Chapman

Pinball Wizard - the Who. The largest applause of the night
Thursday 12/7/07 Somervill Club - Bristol
Played
Drowned - the Who. A slightly slower, more layed back feel is what I was trying to achieve. We will see.
It was a secial night as a long time attendee was leaving. So it was one song until he arrived, then a second. I did not get the second as they ran out of time. I trully was not at all bothered. My mates on the other hand had threatend to join me in the chorus to Website, so it was a blessing! Praise be Richard.

Tuesday Old Duke, 26/6/07 Bristol
A good night, up second to sweeten the area. Me sweeten, but if you were there you will know what I mean.
Rant and Rave time
Now I do not mind loaning my guitar to people, but when you do not get a thank you and your guitar is re-tuned, I tend to regret it. on the other hand people who thank you for the loan both personally and on stage - praise be. You know who you are.
Played
A better man - Jon Chapman. Getting to grips with this song and it is starting to rock as I get more comfortable with it.
Tombstone - Jon Chapman. A premier. Sang the first verse only.
Wednesday 27/6/07 Genesis, Cardiff, Wales (Veu cinema)
Yup thats right a cinema. Genesis playing live in Dusseldorf, Germany but beamed into cinemas in Spain, Sweden and the UK. What a brillient idea.
The gig was pure Genesis, some suprising songs and some omitted. The image was supperb and the sound excellent. An experiment that worked well. I will do this again.
The audiance in Cardiff were great and sang and clapped along, even Phil Collins included us from the stage.

Glastonbudget 2007
Just back from this cracking tribute to Glastonbury. Well worth the effort and small expense. The beer is cheap, the food does not give you the sh*ts and is also very cheap, you cannot get a pie a chips for £3 outside, so how do they do it.
The bands were brill, sorry I could not see any of the unsigned, those I did catch I wil llook out for in the future.
The weather was crap, but they cannot help that altogh a bank holiday is always wet in the uk.
Any how one happy family, roll on next year.

Millwright Arms, Warwick - 25/1/07
A welcome return to the town that started it for me.
I do like it in Warwick. I even got a nice reception when I arrived at the B&B
Went up to the Punchbowl, and it is closed for renovation!!! I hope it has the same character.
Any way discovered the venue had moved so off I walked.
Upon entry; what a reception. It is nice to know one has friends!
It was small and cosy but very adequateS1

Eclipse/Breath - Pink Floyd
Cover Me - Bruce Springsteen
Don't hurt yourself - Marillion
By now they had suffered enough.
I WILL next time join the jam, I have no idea how to, but I must learn. I am not too good at the theory.
Till the next time Warwick
